24/04/2003 Corporate Network Project Development
OAO Bank “Sanct-Petersburg” is one of the largest system-forming banks of St. Petersburg and the Northwest Region of Russia. Being a universal financial organization with a developed system of branches, the Bank has been successfully working over 10 years on the Russian and world financial markets, serving more than 25 thousand legal entities. The Bank furnishes over 600 kinds of banking services for corporate customers and individuals, retaining its position of one of the largest financial institutions of the city and the country.
Task
The bank’s corporate network integrated 19 branches (5 out of them – suburban) and was constructed based on Frame Relay technology using data channels of a small capacity (the minimal committed rate – 32 Kbps). In 2002 the Bank “Sanct-Petersburg” set a task of organizing a data network over high-speed channels, ensuring channels’ reliability and a possibility of flexibly changing its configuration and expanding its capacity. PeterStar won a tender held among four operators.
Solution
PeterStar proposed a modern and economical solution using Ethernet 10/100 Mbps technology. Through necessity of quick implementation the project was carried out in two stages. At the first stage the channels’ capacity was increased up to 1024 Kbps with the retention of Frame Relay technology. A data Ethernet 100 Mbps channel was organized as well between two central branches instead of earlier connected two 2Mbps channels. At the second stage PeterStar installed fiber cable up to 11 branches of the Bank and arranged data channels under Ethernet 10Mbps technology between the Central Bank Office and remote offices. In addition, PeterStar organized for the bank: - a 512 Kbps Internet channel - a 128 Kbps channel up to the Moscow branch of the Bank.
Results
Following the implementation of the project, the Bank “Sanct-Petersburg” 1) More than 300 times increased the capacity of channels between its branches 2) Replaced the corporate network organization technology with a more modern and efficient one 3) Considerably improved the corporate network’s reliability due to fiber cable laying 4) Was permitted to unlimitedly expand the number of services at its offices, both central and remote.
”Enhanced requirements exist on the corporate network of the Bank regarding the reliability of its functioning and the information protection systems. We also appreciate the efficiency of the solution proposed by PeterStar, as well as a possibility of expanding the network in the future. The sphere of banking services continuously develops, new services appear, and therefore it becomes extremely important to effectively organize the telecommunication system to satisfy all specific requirements of the Bank.” says Sergei Vladimirovich Matvienko, Director of the IT Directorate.
