15/05/2003 High-speed Backbone. Mission is Possible!
New multiservice network “IP Backbone” is being constructed by the largest Petersburg telecommunications company PeterStar.
New network means, above all, efficiency of solutions, unlimited data transmission capabilities, high data exchange rates (up to 100 Mbps). This technology meets the security requirements made today, at the same time enabling construction of protected corporate communication networks (MPLS/VPN).
IP Backbone is built on fiber lines as a “ring” structure and provides for using a high-capacity core – up to 10 Gbps (level STM 64).
Launching of the network will make it possible to solve not only today’s problems. This project is mainly aimed at settling long-term tasks. According to the PeterStar management, having implemented the IP Backbone, the company possesses undoubted competitive advantages in the field of rendering broadband data services and Internet access.
“We believe that tomorrow is with the broadband access service” – says the Deputy Director of ZAO PeterStar Eugene Andreev, - “At the moment we consider our “mission” to be in preparing the infrastructure. Next step will be the provision of additional service based on the network. We will be able to offer our customers “video to order’, multimedia conferences, telemedicine materials”.
This technology was tested in the summer of 2002. This February PeterStar is planning to put into operation the first network fragment in the Vassileostrovski District. The segment includes four core nodes and six access nodes, combined by a fiber ring 2.5 Gbps in capacity. By September 2003 the company will have completed the second stage of broadband IP network constructing to cover the whole city in the future. According to specialists’ opinion, in the near future the IP Backbone should have become the priority data and Internet access technology.
