24/04/2003 Project: Corporate network creating
OAO Bank Sanct-Petersburg is one of the largest system-forming banks of St. Petersburg and the Northwest Region of Russia. A universal financial enterprise with a developed affiliate system, the Bank has been successfully operating on the Russian and worldwide financial markets for over 10 years, serving over 25 thousand legal entities. The Bank renders more than 600 kinds of banking services to corporate customers and individuals and maintains the position of one of the largest financial institutions of the city and country.
Task
The Bank’s corporate network combined 19 affiliates (5 out of them suburban) and was built on Frame Relay technology, using data channels of a small capacity (the minimum committed rate – 32 Kbps). In 2002 Bank Sanct-Petersburg set the problem of organizing a data network of high-speed channels and ensuring channel reliability and the capability of flexibly changing the network configuration and expanding its capacity. PeterSar became the winner of a tender among four operators.
Solution
PeterStar proposed a modern and efficient solution based on Ethernet 10/100 Mbps technology. Since the project implementation was rather urgent, the project was accomplished in two stages. At the first stage the channels capacity was increased up to 1024 Kbps with the retention of Frame Relay technology. An Ethernet 100 Mbps data channel was arranged between two central offices of the Bank to replace two 2 Kbps channels connected earlier. At the second stage PeterStar installed a fiber cable going to 11 affiliates of the Bank, and organized Ethernet 10 Mbps data channels between the central office of the Bank and its remote offices.
In addition, PeterStar organized for the Bank: à 512 Kbps Internet access channel and a 128 Kbps channel up to the Moscow affiliate of the bank.
Results
As a result of this project implementation Bank Sanct-Petersburg 1) Rose the capacity of channels between its affiliates by a factor of more than 300 2) Replaced corporate network organization technology by a more advanced and efficient one 3) Considerably increased the corporate network reliability due to fiber-optics cable installed 4) Gained an offing for unlimitedly expanding the number of services both at the central offices and remote ones.
”Heightened requirements are usually imposed on a bank corporate network in terms of its functioning and information protection systems. We also appreciate the efficiency of the solution offered by PeterStar, as well as the capability of expanding our network in the future. The sphere of banking services develops on a regular basis, new services are introduced; therefore effective organization of a telecommunication system meeting all the requirements specific for the Bank becomes an urgent issue.” – says the Director of the IT Directorate Sergei Vladimirovich Matvienko.
