Dial-Up Networking Settings For Windows 95/98 To Work With PeterStar Node

1. Start the icon My Computer located on your desktop and make sure that Dial-Up Networking is set. Otherwise you need to click Start, then Settings and Control Panel. By double clicking start Add/Remove Programs, select the bookmark Windows Setup, find the item Communications, tick it off, press the button Details..., and mark the section Dial-Up Networking, press OK and once more OK.

2. Make sure that the window Network contains Dial-Up Adapter and the protocol TCP/IP on the list of network components. For that press Start, select Settings, then Control Panel and the icon Network. Select the bookmark Configuration and check that Dial-Up Adapter and the protocol TCP/IP are on the list of network components. If these components are available, go to step 3.

If these components, or at least one of them, are absent, you should do the following:

  • To install Dial-Up Adapter press the button Add, and Select Network Components Type appears in the bookmark Configuration. Select the item Adapter and press the button Add on the window Select Network Adapter. Select Microsoft on the list Manufacturers and mark Dial-Up Adapter on the list Network Adapter, press OK.
  • To install TCP/IP press the button Add, and the window Select Network Components Type will appear. Select the item Protocol and press Add on the window Select Network Protocol. Select Microsoft on the list Manufacturers and TCP/IP on the list Network Protocols, press OK.

3. Select the item Dial-Up Adapter, press Properties, select the section Bindings, and make sure that TCP/IP is on the list and is the only one marked. After pressing OK on the window Network the required components will be installed, and you will be prompted to restart the system. Press the button Yes.

4. Creating a new connection. Select the icon My Computer, Dial-Up Adapter, and by double clicking New Connection start the process of creating a new connection. Specify the name of connection (for example PeterStar). In the field Select Modem the model of the modem will be specified, set at the modem installation. If the modem model differs from that used, press the scrollbar, choose from the list the modem required, and then press Next. In the field Area code specify 812, Country code Russia (7). In the field Telephone number specify the modem pool telephone number 320-3370. Once more press Next and Finish. A new item PeterStar appears on the window Dial-Up Networking. Select it and right click to go to the submenu Properties. The window PeterStar appears. Select the bookmark General and remove the tick Use Area code and Country code, then select the bookmark Server Types and tick off TCP/IP only, removing all other ticks; it is obligatory to disable Logon to network and Software compression. Then press the button TCP/IP Settings, and a window appears in which you need to do the following:

  • Mark the item Mark the item Server assigned IP address
  • Mark the item Specify name server addresses. Then specify Primary DNS - 217.195.65.9 and Secondary DNS - 217.195.66.253. Use the remaining fields as default. Press OK. Press the button Settings on the bookmark General; a window appears, in which on the bookmark General you may change the port rate Maximum Speed (in case of communication problems set 57600, 38400 or 19200 for WIN modems). Thereafter go to the bookmark Connection, on which you may set the connection waiting time Cancel the call if not connected within to 120 seconds in case of problems with reaching the number. By pressing Advanced it is possible, if necessary, to fill in the modem initialization string Extra Settings, as well as marking Use error control, Required to connect and Compress data (the latter can be disabled in case of connection problems).

5. Now your PC is set and ready for connection to the Internet. For that you need to start the created connection PeterStar. To enter the network put your login in the line Username and your password in the line Password (data given at the registration) and press the button Connect. After dialing the number your PC establishes a connection with the server PeterStar, and at the right bottom of the task panel an additional icon appears in the form of two blinking monitors to inform you of the status of connection.
