Question:
When dealing with Russian sites, texts in Russian sometimes appear in the form of unreadable sequence of upper- and lower-case symbols. What can I do to read such a text?
Answer:
There are several Russian encoding options in the Internet. The most popular
are KOI-8 and Win-1251. If your browser uses Win-1251, but the page you’ve
entered is written in KOI-8, you will see an unreadable text. In Internet
Explorer 3, encoding is switched by clicking with the left mouse button
on the toggle figure at lower right of the explorer frame, and selecting
the required encoding. In Internet Explorer 4, this is done by clicking
on the relevant button on the tool bar. In Netscape 3.0, you need to select
Options - Encoding - WIN-1251 or KOI8-R, then Options
- Encoding - Set Default Encoding. To set Netscape 4.0 or higher, the settings will be the same, but starting
with the menu item View. The procedure for setting up encoding in Netscape
Messenger is available here.
Question:
If I get a poor connection, what can I do to prevent it being interrupted?
Answer:
If your line is of low quality, try experimenting with the values of your modem’s S9 and S10 registers. These registers set time parameters for locking in the carrier. In each of these registers, a value from 0 to 255 can be written, which shows the time measured in tenths of second. If the carrier on the line gets lost in a time exceeding the value of S10 (for example, due to noise or a poor contact), then communication is interrupted. If the carrier has appeared on the line, then a length of time determined by register S9 should pass prior to locking in the carrier by the modem. The default values of these registers are S9=6, S10=7. In order to fully avoid communication interruption due to losing the carrier, it is possible to write 255 in register S10 (command ATS10=255). This is a popular option, but has one nasty side effect: The modem stays on the line until being reset manually (for example, by turning off the power). We recommend the following values for these registers: S9=30, S10=80, or even S9=40, S10=100. With these values, which have been obtained for Russia experimentally, the modem will operate online satisfactorily, and at the same time will not hang up if a remote modem breaks communication. The command to set these values is ATS9=40S10=100. Besides, if your modem is a USRobotics
Sportster or Courier, you can try to artificially reduce the connection speed using the commands &N and &U. The first is responsible for establishing the maximum connection speed, while the second establishes the minimal speed. For example, the command to limit the speed between 19200 and 26400 is as follows: AT&U10&N13.
